Catching Up With The Seminole Men's Tennis Team

A look at what the Seminoles have been up to during the summer.

Tallahassee, Fla.- Just because it's not college tennis season doesn't mean that the Florida State men's tennis team hasn't been busy this summer. Here's a look at what the guys have been up to.

A Good Summer Start
Six Seminoles qualified for USTA tournaments all over the world. At the 2007 Futures of Rochester graduating senior Ytai Abougzir, junior Maciek Sykut, and incoming freshman Clint Bowles all qualified for the main singles draw while sophomore Bradley Mixson played doubles. Junior Jean-Yves Aubone earned a spot in the main draw of the California Futures. Sam Chang qualified and played in the China Futures.



A Look at Individual Players

Sam Chang- Chang earned 4 ATP Tour points this summer in Asia, which puts him in the top 1,200 players in the world.

Maciek Sykut- "Magic" made the main draw in singles and doubles of the Rochester Pro Circuit. "Magic" also attended summer school and worked at the summer tennis camps.

Jean-Yves Aubone- Aubone qualified for events on the Pro Circuit and including a quarterfinal appearance at the ITF Millenium Tennis Club Futures in Joplin, Missouri. Aubone's earned two ATP Tour points for his trip to the quarterfinals.

Chris Cloer- Cloer has been playing the ITA Summer Circuit and won the event held in Tallahassee as well as the southeast region event. Advanced to the semifinals at the National ITA Summer Circuit Championships.

Bobby Deye- Won the ITA Summer Circuit doubles draw in Tallahassee with teammate Michael O'Shea.

Michael O'Shea- Won the ITA Summer Circuit doubles draw in Tallahassee with teammate Bobby Deye. He also made it to the finals of the singles draw, losing to his teammate Chris Cloer.

Bradley Mixson- Made the main draw in doubles of the Rochester Pro Circuit. Played in the ITA Summer Circuit event in Tallahassee. Attended summer school.

Drew Bailey- Made the semifinals at the ITA Summer Circuit event in Tallahassee. Worked with Seminole High Performance camps. Received high grades during the summer semester.

Ryan Boyajian- Coached at Bill Clark Tennis Center in Weston, Fla. and received excellent marks during the summer semester.

Clint Bowles- The incoming freshman won the 2007 National Clay Court Championships and 2007 USTA Florida Junior State Closed Championships. Bowles also advanced to the Round of 16 at the 2007 National Hard Court National Championships, and picked up two ATP singles and eight ATP doubles points.

Jason Hood- Played on the ITA Summer Circuit and was a finalist in the doubles event held in Tallahassee.

Coaches

The FSU coaches had a successful four weeks of High-Performance and regular tennis camps.

Assistant Coach Nick Crowell is now engaged to Lindsey Smith from Tallahassee.



Alumni Update

Paul Haarhuis- One of FSU's more prominent alums is still going strong on the courts. Haarhuis teamed with partner Jacco Eltingh to win the Wimbledon over 35 Double's Championship.

Ytai Abougzir- Has earned 2 ATP singles points and has earned nearly 50 ATP doubles points making him one of the best 700 doubles players in the world.

Jonathas Sucupira- Graduated in April and helped out with High-Performance camps.

Mat Cloer- Has been working in New York this summer and will join the Seminoles as a volunteer assistant coach to help with the 2007-08 season.

- Florida State's Fall Invitational will feature players from several Universities including Florida, Georgia, Miami, and Illinois.
