Coaching Achievements
The 2014-15 season will be Matthew Nielsen's seventh year as the Head Men's and Women's Tennis Coach at the University of Rochester. He was named to the position on September 1, 2008 after serving as the assistant coach for both teams for five years. Nielsen is a 2001 graduate of Penn State University with a baccalaureate degree in Kinesiology. During his time as a Nittany Lion, he played as high as 1st doubles and 2nd singles. He earned his master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Rochester's Simon Graduate School of Business in 2008.

Rochester men's tennis has seen much success since Coach Nielsen joined the team in 2003. He received the University Athletic Association Men's Co-Coach of the Year in 2005 after the team finished second in the UAA championships, its best result in eight years. The men upset 5th ranked Washington University in St. Louis in the semifinals before losing to Emory University in the finals. The team produced three All-Americans that year and received a bid to the NCAA Championships, losing in a tight 4-3 battle with tennis power Williams College. Senior Avinash Reddy was selected to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division Men's At-Large Team. Coach Nielsen has coached four male ITA All-Americans since the 2003-04 season. The men's squad has been consistently ranked in the competitive Northeast Region throughout Nielsen's tenure as head coach.

Along with the strong performances on the court, the Yellowjackets have seen much success in the classroom under Coach Nielsen. Since the 2008-09 season, 26 players have earned the ITA Scholar-Athlete Award, given to student-athletes who earn a 3.5 GPA or above for the academic year. The team has earned the ITA All-Academic Team Award (average team GPA of 3.2 or above) all four years.

Belonging to the UAA conference, arguably the toughest conference in Division III tennis, the Yellowjackets perennially play top competition from all across the country. The team has made steady improvement and is looking forward to competing hard in the upcoming season.
