Signing Week is underway, and tomorrow, senior tennis players will begin signing their National Letters of Intent with Division I and Division II schools. We have been tracking verbal commitments since the beginning of the academic year (boys, girls), and throughout the remainder of the week, we will be featuring commitment announcements and comments from a variety of boys and girls.

Today, we hear comments from diverse tennis players across the country in our National Roundup. We talked with several recruits who have made their college selection. We asked them about their college choices - and how they reached their decisions.

Brett Landau to UNC Asheville

3-Star senior Brett Landau has had success in both high school and USTA tennis. Over six years of high school tennis, he posted records of 79-4 and 81-2 in singles and doubles, respectively. Landau, who holds varsity letters in basketball and track, also progressed far into the doubles draws of several USTA sectional and national tournaments. When it came to college, Landau found his match at UNC Asheville.

I wanted to find a smaller liberal arts school in the southeast. UNCA is about 4,500 students, which is a great size. I was also impressed with the food at the school as well as in the city of Asheville. The academics are very good, and the basketball program at UNCA is really doing well - which is always fun.

Did you visit the school? What was your impression?

I took official visits to several schools. I really liked how warm and friendly everyone was at Asheville. I was impressed with the academics and the location. Although I am from Florida, I do have a lot of family in Atlanta, which is fairly close.

I met Coach [Lise] Gregory and Assistant Coach [Tom] Hand. I went to lunch with them and was able to meet the team and watch a practice. They were really great about answering all my questions. They also toured me throughout the school and the athletic program personally.

It sounds like the coaches made quite an impression on you.

Coach Gregory was a world-class player and is a really good coach. I think that both she and Coach Hand will help bring my game to a higher level.

What are you most looking forward to with the UNC Asheville program?

I liked the program at UNCA because I think it is up and coming, and I think that I can contribute a lot to it, especially in doubles which I believe is my expertise.

My goals for freshman year are to improve my game as much as possible. I am hoping to be an asset immediately in the doubles lineup and to work up through the singles lineup. I also plan to do well academically and determine my major.
