Violetta Li will bring home two USTA Gold Balls to Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, after capturing the singles and doubles titles at the USTA Girls 12s Clay Court Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Violetta Li won the singles championship
The 17th-seeded Li won the singles championship with a 6-2, 6-0 decision over No. 2 Danielle Han (Laguna Niguel, California) at Spencer Love Tennis Center. Later, Li teamed up with Emma Li (Livingston, New Jersey) - no relation - as the seventh-seeded duo beat the No. 6 seeds Mikayla Noel (Winston-Salem, North Carolina) and Jacqueline Feehan (Skaneateles, New York) 7-5, 2-6, 6-0.
“Mentally, it helped that I knew I could match up to these other players,” Violetta Li said of her tournament play. “Even though the rankings showed they were better, I knew that my game was strong enough to beat them. Also, I had a really good friend who mentally helped me get through these matches. They told me that while playing these matches, I’m playing for myself and for my love of tennis. This helped me to stay mentally tough and helped me to keep pushing even when I was losing.”
Li definitely stepped up to the challenge during the tournament.
Earlier, in the singles quarterfinals, Li outlasted top seeded Mila Mikoczi Spivey (Houston, Texas) 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. Li advanced to the championship matchup with a 6-3, 6-4 semifinals victory over No. 5 Daniella Yogumyan (Flushing, New York).
