UChicago Captured the ITA Division III Women's Team Indoor Title
Share:

A year after Claremont-Mudd-Scrips denied the University of Chicago its third straight ITA Division III Women’s National Team Indoor title, the Maroons avenged the loss and hoisted the trophy again.

No. 1 UChicago defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 4-1 in the final last Sunday at the Leftwich Tennis Center in Memphis, Tennessee. The Maroons have won three of the last four ITA Indoor titles to go along with their first NCAA Division III National Championship, which they won last May.

"As a coach, there's always a little concern about how a team handles success. After last year's NCAA tournament, it would be easy for the team to feel a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment heading into a new season,” UChicago head coach Jay Tee said. “Fortunately, this team still has a hunger to win and showed it this weekend in Memphis."

UChicago jumped to a 3-0 lead over CMS by winning the doubles point and getting wins from Sylwia Mikos at No 1 singles (6-1, 7-5 win over Lindsay Eiseman) and Nicole Geller (6-0, 6-3 over Ella Brissett 6-0, 6-3) at No. 2 singles

CMS secured its lone point at No. 4 singles with Rebecca Kong defeating Sarena Biria 6-1, 6-3. Clara Zou clinched the title for UChicago with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Celestina Cedillo at the No. 6 spot.

"The team set a goal of owning the energy in the building and fighting together as a collective group, which helped us play our best against some really great teams,” Tee said. “When the margins are so thin, our self-belief and tenacity were the difference in the big moments."
