Where Are They Now?
Countdown: Checking In With Kristy Frilling Skelly
Share:

Kristy Frilling Skelly of Sidney, Ohio, was TennisRecruiting.net's No. 2 prospect for women's college tennis in 2008.

A tall left-hander with two-handed strokes on both sides, Frilling went on to become the first female four-year All-American at Notre Dame, where she won 235 matches and led the Fighting Irish to their first-ever NCAA semifinal finishes.

Frilling then played 18 months on the WTA Tour, winning five pro doubles titles, before a back injury forced her out of the game.

Today, Frilling lives in San Francisco with her husband and former Notre Dame sweetheart, Connor Skelly. Frilling, 26, works as an account manager at ZOZI, a tech startup that connects merchants with customers and encourages people to get out and experience the world.

Before joining ZOZI last summer, and still not long off the pro tour, Frilling took a 10-month trip with her husband to 37 countries over three continents. That adventure included 73 days of hiking and sleeping in a tent in New Zealand - "I must say the hiking was really hard; I thought I was a fit person!"

She also reconnected with many friends she met throughout her tennis career, from a German she met during her pro days, to a pen pal she met when she was 13-years-old. The couple finished up in Asia, where they spent time with Frilling's extended family in South Korea.

TennisRecruiting.net caught up with Frilling recently and asked her about her tennis career and her spirit for travel. It turns out, one has led to the other and helped guide her career off the court.

Questions and Answers

Tennis Recruiting (TR): Tell us about your job. What do you do at ZOZI?

Kristy Frilling (KF): Zozi's mission is to get people out there and experience the world. Whether you're a local or a tourist, nowadays people are more interested in doing things rather than having things. We're trying to make that easier for everyone to accomplish in the digital world. I'm an account manager, so I work with our clients, implementing our management software with their business, incorporating online booking for their websites, and managing the relationship.

TR: What do you like most about your new job?

KF: I spend my days chatting with all sorts of people who spend their days helping people experience the world - from kayak rental companies, to escape rooms, to National Park tour providers. I love that I feel like I am helping people and love working in an industry that is also my passion. I also really enjoy my co-workers. Everyone is so active, kind and adventurous, and our team culture makes me look forward to coming to work every day.
