Commitment Profile
LSU Commit Is A Woman Among Boys
Share:

Maggie Cubitt knew she couldn't back down.

If she wanted to become a better tennis player, Cubitt had to learn to play with the boys - no matter how they treated her.

She really had no choice.

Five-Star Maggie Cubitt Has Committed to LSU

As a sixth grader, Cubitt arrived at The Country Club of Spartanburg in South Carolina as the only girl on the courts with eight boys.

Every boy was at least two years older than Cubitt, and they all enjoyed tormenting her on some level.

“The boys made me cry every day. They were so mean to me, telling me how bad I was,” Cubitt said. “But that is kind of what developed the competitive side of me and made me who I am. I had to stand up for myself.”

The early indoctrination steeled Cubitt for any adversity she would face in her matches. Although it would have been easy to let the tears drive her away from the sport, Cubitt refused to let the boys win.

“She used to give it right back to us,” said Arpit Rana, one of Cubitt's practice partners. “She was always very fiery and loved playing with us. It's unbelievable how much better she got over the years.”

Good enough to earn several Division I scholarship offers. Cubitt, a five-star junior, verbally committed to LSU last week.

“At a lot of the places I visited everyone told me I would go somewhere and have a gut feeling and I had that at LSU,” Cubitt said. “I went on the campus and fell in love with it and the program. I was like, 'I know this is where I want to go. I know this will make me happy.'”
