Winter Nationals
Gorzny Rallies in Final to Win Boys 14s Title
Share:

VisitTucson, Tucson's convention and visitors bureau, states that the average high temperature for southern Arizona in January is 66 beautiful degrees. The city of Tucson also only averages about 12 days of rain per year; so it came with some surprise that the 2019 USTA Winter Nationals wrapped up this past week in Tucson with temperatures in the 40s, players donning long pants and rain on parts of three days.

Singles Champ Sebastian Gorzny & Finalist Brayden Michna

It came as no surprise that most of the tournament's top seeds in the Boys 14 singles advanced through the maze that is the massive draw.

That included No. 2 seed Sebastian Gorzny, a high school freshman from Irvine, California, who edged No. 17 seed Brayden Michna of Taylor, Texas 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 in the finals to take the title.

Gorzny used his steady play and took advantage of opportunities on his first serve and forehand to outlast a fatigued and laboring Michna. Michna was coming off a three-set semifinal win over tournament top seed, Evan Wen.

"It was the only match where I lost a set," Gorzny said. "Once I lost the first set, I knew I had to change my game and get more aggressive."
