It was Barry, Barry good weekend at Sanlando Park.

Barry University prolonged its stranglehold on the NCAA Division II National Championships by capturing both titles again.

The top-ranked Berry women won a record-setting fifth straight title by rallying after losing the doubles point to beat fourth-ranked Central Oklahoma 4-1 in Altamonte Springs, Florida on Sunday.

The Barry women have won seven overall NCAA titles, which ties BYU-Hawaii for the second most in Division II history and is one behind Armstrong (8). Both BYU-Hawaii and Armstrong have eliminated their athletic programs.

The Bucs moved past SIU-Edwardsville as the only team in Division II women’s history to win five straight titles.

“It’s just a great, great moment. So, so happy and proud of the girls for the fight,” Barry women’s head coach Avi Kigel said. “It didn’t start the right way losing the doubles point, but we found a way to win those four points. It’s just a great year for us and great history for Barry women’s tennis.”

The third-seeded Barry men captured the program’s third straight title and sixth overall with a 4-1 win over No. 4 Wayne State on Sunday.

It’s the first national title for Barry head coach Thomas Hipp, who was an assistant coach when Barry won in 2010 and 2013.

“This unbelievable season is coming to a conclusion with the best end you can have, winning a national championship,” Hipp said. “The team did really well since the end of the regular season. They’ve dialed in since conference. It’s unbelievable how they are focused. I almost just have to be a cheerleader. They go out there and win everything.”

The Barry women lost the doubles point for just the second time this season. But the Bucs recovered to roll through singles, dropping just 14 total games in their four wins.

Kim Moosbacher, who replaced Helene Scholsen in the lineup, beat Blythe Buntrock 6-1, 6-1 at the six line to even the match.

Daniela Farfan defeated Tizia Brocks 6-0, 6-2 on court five to give Barry a lead the Bucs wouldn’t surrender. Jil Engelmann beat Christine Canete at the two line 6-4, 6-1 to set up the title-clinching win from Madeline Bosnjak, who beat Grace Chadick 6-2, 6-2 at the four spot.

“Being able to clinch is even nicer. I am really honored to do that for this team,” Bosnjak said. “(Jil, Kim and I) are all seniors and all graduate and this is like the best way you can graduate and say goodbye to a wonderful tennis career and era.”

The Barry men captured the doubles point with wins by Alessandro Giuliato and Hugo Cazaban and Ignasi Forcano and Martin Gutierrez.

Alejandro Ibañez Gallego beat Ben Lakeman at the two line, 6-0, 6-2 for a 2-0 lead. After Daniel Grey beat Forcano 6-4, 6-3 for Wayne’s State’s only win, Arnau Rodriguez rallied from down 5-4 in the first set to beat Cedric Drenth 7-5, 6-1 and put Barry on the doorstep of another title.

Giuliato clinched the championship by ralling from down 5-2 in the second set to beat Niklas Karcz at the three spot 6-2, 7-5.

The win avenged an earlier 4-3 loss to Wayne State, when the Bucs were without Ibañez Gallego.

“I feel like this season has been the toughest one out of the last three years. I can not be more proud of this group of people,” Ibañez Gallego said. “I am really proud of everybody. We deserve it.”
