Spring Signing Week '15: Pomona Power - Kim Signs with Sagehens

There were no fancy academies or marathon practices. There were no 10-and-under tournaments or tennis camps. Instead, Joy Kim took a slow and steady approach on her road to a college tennis career.

Joy Kim is heading to Pomona
Coached by her father Byong from the time she picked up a racquet at four years old, she played just once weekly until the age of 11 when she decided to enter her first tournament.

Hailing from Van Nuys, Calif., Kim faced some of the toughest competition in the country in her maiden competitive experience. It didn't help that she was mistakenly entered in a Level 2 event instead of the beginner Level 5.

"After my first tournament, I was terrified," Kim said, laughing. "I was like, 'What is tennis? I'm not good enough!' But in the long run, it was a good choice to play tournaments because I got to see other girls play, and that helped me love the sport even more."

Experienced gained in Southern California's USTA tournaments and her "aggressive" style of play led to a spot on the Campbell Hall Episcopal high school team. During her sophomore year, she was joined on the doubles court by her sister Jay, just one year her junior.

"It used to be really bad in the beginning," Joy said of their on-court relationship. "We would start off being nice to each other, but by the end of the match we just couldn't be cohesive. Now we're pretty solid on court; we understand each other, and we know when to back off."

Kim hadn't even considered playing tennis in college until experiencing the friendship and camaraderie that accompanied her high school career. Her progress from a freshman No. 2 doubles player to the team's No. 1 singles representative as a senior didn't hurt either.
