2008 Peach State Classic

Perfect late-spring weather graced the Memorial Day weekend in metro-Atlanta for the participants in the 17th Peach State Junior Tennis Classic, a USTA Level 3 National hosted at the Racquet Club of the South in Norcross, GA. (For action photos from the tournament, click here.)

Boys 18 Singles

Top-seeded senior Kevin King (Peachtree City, Ga.) was determined to win his last Peach State tournament. He breezed through to the semifinals without dropping a set. He faced #7 seed Ian Chadwell (Franklin, Tenn.) in the semis.

"I knew it was going to be a tough match [against Chadwell]. I was just trying to keep it away from his forehand and look to be offensive early in the points. I didn't want to let him get control of the points."

King won the match 7-5, 6-2. At the same time, #2 seed Ryan Lipman (Nashville, Tenn.) was playing Jadon Phillips (Macon, Ga.) in the other semifinal. Lipman had recently lost to Phillips in the semis of the Gator Bowl, but he looked on a mission, playing a great match from start to finish and coming away with a 6-4, 6-3.

Entering the final, Lipman had to be confident. He had just defeated King 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-1 in the finals of the Norcross, Ga. National Open the previous weekend. But King, who will attend Georgia Tech next fall, was confident as well.
