Notre Dame won its sixth big East championship in April,as the Irish defeated Louisville 4-0.Stephen Bass was named the tournament's Most outstanding Player and Bobby Bayliss was named Big East Coach of the Year a sixth time.
Post Season Highlights
Notre Dame won the Big East Championship in 2007 and advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA Championship.The Irish lost a heartbreaker there to Southern California 4-3.Notre Dame led 4-2 in the third set of the final match at #5 singles despite a severe ankle sprain to # 1 player Stephen Bass,suffered in the doubles.The Irish finished #6 in the final ITA rankings with a regular season win over the NCAA finalist,Illinois.
After winning the Big East Notre Dame advanced to the NCAA Championships for the 16th time in 17 years.The Irish won the NCAA regional,defeating Wisconsin 4-0 to advance to the round of 16.After #1 player Stephen Bass suffered a badly sprained ankle in the doubles Notre Dame rallied only to lose a heartbreaker 4-3 to Southern Cal after leading 4-2 in the third set of the final match.Earlier in the year the Irish won their third Blue Gray National Collegiate Tennis Classic,defeating Alabama 4-0 in the final.
Stephen Bass was named to the 2007 ITA All America Team as a result of his top 10 finish.He,Sheeva Parbhu,and Ryan Keckley played in the NCAA Individual Championships where Parbhu lost 7-6 in the third set to the winner,Somdev Devvarmann of Virginia.Parbhu had been a quarterfinalist in 2006.Brett Helgeson,Barry King,and Keckley all made it into the ITA national rankings during the year.Bass was named Most Outstanding Player in both the Big East and Blue Gray tournaments.Parbhu was the runner-up in the Midwest Regionals and he and Keckley won the doubles.
Notre Dame coach Bobby Bayliss was named Big East Coach of the Year for 2007.He was also the Midwest Regional coach of the Year and a finalist for the national award.His 663 victories place him fifth among all active NCAA coaches.
Ryan Sachire became the first Notre Dame assistant to lead his team to a top 10 finish in his first year.
